THESEUS

BEFORE CLAUDE,
THERE WAS THESEUS.

STEP 01

CLAUDE SHANNON

Claude Shannon created the mathematical foundation of information theory and became a foundational figure of the digital age.

THESEUS

Shannon built an electromechanical mouse that could navigate a maze, learn from mistakes and remember its path.

CLAUDE

The New Yorker reports that company lore holds the name Claude is partly a reference to Claude Shannon.

History does not prove that Claude was named after Theseus. It reveals the remarkable technological lineage behind the name.

THE MOUSE THAT LEARNED THE MAZE

EDITORIAL RECONSTRUCTION / HISTORICAL APPARATUS

LABORATORY NOTE / 1950s

In an era before modern neural networks, Claude Shannon built an electromechanical system capable of learning its way through a maze.

Relay circuits beneath the maze stored information about its route. Once the destination was discovered, Theseus could remember the path.

“ONE OF THE EARLIEST ATTEMPTS TO TEACH A MACHINE TO LEARN.”

04 / THE MODERN ECHO

THE NAME
APPEARS AGAIN.

More than seven decades after Shannon's maze-learning machine, Anthropic, Macquarie Asset Management and GIC announced Theseus Infrastructure, a data-center platform intended to serve Anthropic.

THE CONNECTION IS HISTORY.
THE COINCIDENCE IS MODERN.

This does not establish a historical naming connection between Shannon's mouse and the infrastructure company. It is a documented recurrence of the name Theseus in Anthropic's modern ecosystem.

THESEUS

THE MACHINE THAT LEARNED

THESEUS is not based on a fictional mascot invented for a token. The name comes from a real machine in the history of computing. This project connects documented pieces of technological history and turns the forgotten mouse back into a cultural symbol.

NOT: “Anthropic created this token.”

NOT: “Claude was officially named after Theseus.”

INSTEAD: A historical lineage hidden in plain sight.

BEFORE CLAUDE,
THERE WAS THESEUS.
